Three Essential Upgrades Every Gun Needs

We've been radio-silent here for a minute so it's time for some lighting-round educational content.

If you own a firearm, chances are you bought it to use it, but if you are missing these three essential upgrades, you're gonna have a bad time.

  1. Optics - It is the current year. Every gun needs an optic of some kind. Yes your grandpa probably qualified at a thousand yards on iron sights, but if you're missing optics on your gun, you're missing out. This is far and away the easiest way to make a novice shooter level up. (Yes, they should still practice, but it really makes a difference.) My wife grew up hunting and shooting - the first time she got behind a red dot, her first reaction was: "This is like cheating!" That's the point - if you're using a gun for self-defense, you need to realize that you are in a life-or-death struggle, and you didn't choose to be there! The attacker has the advantage, and you should take every edge you can. Put an optic on your gun.
  2. Light—Did you know that half of all time is nighttime? And that even when it's daytime, interior lighting may not be sufficient to determine whether or not you should perforate the perceived threat? Put a light on both your carry gun, and any long gun you use for self-defense. Yes, you could hold a flashlight in one hand, but again, see point #1 - you are looking for every advantage you can, and not having to fumble with one hand to see what you are shooting is imperative. Lights are also relatively inexpensive compared to the gun, so what are you waiting for?
  3. Sling/Holster - Let's talk Weapon Retention - A long gun should have a sling, a handgun should live in a holster. What constitutes a good holster is a whole other post, but we recommend two-point slings for long guns. Why? Well, the only way your gun is going to hurt you is if your gun becomes someone else's gun in a struggle. Slings are cheap compared to the price of a gun, and they will make your life 1000% times better and maybe even a bit longer. Get a sling.
