We’ve sold a bunch of Baofengs to first responders all over the country - and this video is a great example as to why.
Bad situations can become much worse if you don’t have backup tools to get the job done. Here are a few takeaways from the video:
For First responders:
- Make sure your department has a PACE plan to route your primary comms to any needed assets. Talk about that now.
- t’s pretty standard to have radios in a department that are not meant to be easily programmed in the field. This dummy-proofs the radio, which can be a great thing, but is the main reason their radios weren’t able to be used in this situation.
- If you have a spare radio, keep it in your vehicle (if allowed by your department’s rules)
- If you have specific contingent frequency requests (like V-TAC or U-TAC) - let us help you program those in!
For Everyone:
- Keep your tools on you! You never know when you might need them.
- Let this put to rest the Sad Ham’s refrain of “Baofengs are useless.”
- If you’re new to radio, let us help you develop a pace plan and point you to resources to get a license that works for you. Sign up for a free consultation and we’ll get you all set.
- We can’t overstate how important it is to know your tools. This team was able to work outside the box because they had the technical knowledge to make it work. As easy as we try to make radio for newbies, finding ways to turn radio into a hobby that you enjoy will make the tools vastly more effective if you have used them in an emergency.
